Qualification

The 2023 Cricket World Cup will see ten teams in action. Qualification was primarily determined by the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, spanning from 2020 to 2023. The top eight Super League teams secured automatic berths, with India, as hosts, guaranteed a spot. The remaining two positions were fiercely contested by the bottom five Super League teams and the top five affiliates in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier held in June and July 2023.

Notably, former champions West Indies missed out after a defeat to Scotland. Ireland and Zimbabwe, both full members, also failed to make the cut, leaving only Sri Lanka from the four full members in contention. The Netherlands secured the final slot by winning an elimination match against Scotland.

The trophy journeyed to various countries before returning on September 4, 2023. The official anthem, ‘Dil Jashn Bole,’ released on September 20, composed by Pritam with lyrics by Shloke Lal and Saaveri Verma. Featuring Ranveer Singh and others, the anthem didn’t resonate well with fans.

Controversy Before Event

In 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was on the brink of boycotting the Asia Cup due to a disagreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The source of contention stemmed from BCCI’s refusal to participate in the 2023 Asia Cup, initially slated to take place in Pakistan. Fortunately, a resolution was achieved in June 2023 when the Asian Cricket Council announced the adoption of a hybrid model, championed by PCB. As per this arrangement, nine out of the 13 matches in the 2023 Asia Cup will be conducted in Sri Lanka.
